TASK 6 : CHOOSE A GAME THAT CONSISTS OF NARRATIVE WITH CHARACTERS. LIST THE FUNCTIONS OF EACH CHARACTERS.

  • Narrative means the non-interactive part of a game's story, the part in which the game designer tell the players things without letting him do anything.
  • Interactivity is almost the opposite of narrative; narrative flows under the direction of the author, while interactivity depends on the player for motive power.
  • Their power lies in providing context to the player. For example, the title crawl presented in "The Legend of Zelda":

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA

THE FUNCTIONS OF EACH CHARACTERS : "THE LEGEND OF ZELDA"

Ganon
 - Ganon is known as the King of Evil, and the source of all the problems occurring in Hyrule. He has great power, and creates evil minions to ravage the lands of Hyrule. His appearance is unknown, because anyone who has seen him, didn't return alive. Ganon makes himself invisible even until the final battle, but Link will reveal the beast, and save Hyrule.

Zelda
 - Princess Zelda is the beautiful, and talented daughter of the King of Hyrule, and she is the heir to the throne. When Hyrule Castle was attacked, Zelda was captured by Ganon, an evil fiend in search of the Triforce. In hopes of saving Hyrule, Zelda shattered her Triforce of Wisdom into eight pieces, hiding them from Ganon. Only Link can save her...

Impa
 - Impa is an old, but dedicated nursemaid to Princess Zelda. The two share a great relationship, and Impa almost considers Zelda her daughter, and would do anything to protect her. When Hyrule Castle is under attack, the wounded Impa escapes to find a boy with enough courage to save Hyrule. Stumbling across Link, Impa tells him he must find all the pieces of the Triforce, and save Princess Zelda. Impa then died in Link's arms. But, did she really die? She is said to be the old woman that aids Link through the game with potions and advice.

Old Man
 - The Old Man can be encountered in the various caves, and dungeons around Hyrule, and he is always ready to give Link helpful tips to save Princess Zelda. The Old Man is very wise, and caring, and supposedly has great magical abilities. The Old Man gives Link his first sword, as he will need it to save Hyrule.

Old Woman
 - The Old Woman, like the Old Man, is found in various caves throughout Hyrule. She is skilled in Potions, and she will not just hand them out to Link. Link must first show her the Letter that he receives from the Old Man and then the Old Women will sell Potions. She looks very similar to Impa, but not much is known about their relationship.

Shopkeeper
 - The shopkeeper is the man who runs all the little shops all around Hyrule. Some of the shops are hidden, and only true heroes will be able to find them. He sells Link the finest items available, and always has goods in stock. This man may seem like a nice guy, but if you break something, you won't just buy it...

TASK 7 : Reflect on the games your played, and then discuss how the narrative tips contribute to the success of these games.

T      General Uses of Narrative :

Can add an extra dimension to game.
●Can also hinder the game by shifting focus. Microsoft Bob, Grim Fandango (playing a movie or novel phenomenon)

Uses of Narrative :
● Narrative can add an extra dimension to all computing, metaphors shape ad campaigns, user reception and comprehension, can add meaning outside of what seems to be on the surface of the software, can question the software itself and seem to break the technological constraints (MGS and Psychomantis, Eternal Darkness, Virtual Valerie)

Simple Narrative Example: Super Mario Brothers

● Introduces basic

   characters and world.
● Allows for basic

   framework that can
   be altered.

TASK 1 : CHOOSE ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE GAMES, AND DISSECT GAME
                    ACCORDING TO ITS STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS

 PUZZLE GAME

  • Puzzle games focus on logical and conceptual challenges, although occasionally the games add time-pressure or other action-elements. Games usually involve shapes, colors, or symbols, and the player must directly or indirectly manipulate them into a specific pattern.

  • Rather than presenting a random collection of puzzles to solve, puzzle games typically offer a series of related puzzles that are a variation on a single theme. This theme could involve pattern recognition, logic, or understanding a process.

  • There is a large variety of puzzle games. Some feed to the player a random assortment of blocks or pieces that they must organize in the correct manner, such as Tetris, Klax and Lumines.  Others present a preset game board or pieces and challenge the player to solve the puzzle by achieving a goal (Bomberman, The Incredible Machine). Another type of puzzle game requires the player to build systems out of supplied parts.

  • Puzzle games are often easy to develop and adapt, being manifest on dedicated arcade units, home video game consoles, personal digital assistants and mobile phones.

classis structural elements of games:

  1. RULE-BASED :  These games usually have a simple set of rules, where players manipulate game pieces on a grid,  network or other interaction space. Players must unravel clues in order to achieve some of victory condition, which will then allow them to advance to the next level. Completing each puzzle will usually lead to a more difficult challenge, although some games avoid exhausting the player by offering easier levels between more difficult ones.

includes  games with characters   moving through an environment, controlled either directly
or indirectly . This can cross-over with other action  genres: a platform game  which requires a novel
mechanic to complete levels might be a  "puzzle platformer", such as manipulating time in Braid.  Finally,
it includes   other  action games that require timing and accuracy with pattern-matching or logic skills,
     such  as the   first-person Portal
